Solidarity with Counter-G8 Protesters

From the No! G8 Legal TeamJuly 6, 2008

* Arrestees are still in jail and face years in prison
* Local organizers may face arrests
* Arrestees and organizers friends and families are facing harassment andpossible house raids by police

Activists and organizers are asking local groups and individuals to call,e-mail, visit and protest at Japanese embassies over the unjust arrests, detentions, deportations, and repression occurring around counter-G8mobilization in Japan.

Japanese police continue to escalate repression against protesters of theGroup of 8 Summit. This is part of a growing trend of the suppression ofhuman rights in Japan. Yesterday’s demonstration of approximately fivethousand was lined with, and sometimes boxed in by, several thousand policein full riot gear. At least four people – including a Reuters reporter –were arrested.

In one arrest, the police shattered the window of a soundtruck and dragged out the driver. Hours after the demonstration ended thelegal team had already received numerous reports of police misconduct.

This latest action comes after weeks of repressive activity on behalf of thepolice and government. Activists throughout Japan have been arrested atdemonstrations and in their homes, often on “technical” charges, such as notregistering a change of address. Overt surveillance of activists, academicsand reporters has been taking place for months, and with some localactivists for years. International conference participants and protestershave been interrogated for hours at the border and many have been deniedentry into the country without warrant. The legal team sees this as aviolation of people’s right to freely exchange ideas.

“What we have witnessed in the streets of Sapporo is part of an ongoing andescalating campaign to suppress the movement for real democracy in Japan,” said Marina Sitrin, professor and member of the National Lawyers Guild, a USbased human rights organization that is a part of the No! G8 Legal Team.

“We were surprised by the excessive force used by police in today’sdemonstration,” said Ko Watari, of WATCH, a Japanese legal network createdto document police and government misconduct during the anti G8 protests.“This was a non-violent demonstration where no acts against property orpeople took place, or even appeared likely to take place.” The arrestedReuter’s cameraman was standing on a public sidewalk when seized byplainclothes police; his video camera was confiscated and has not beenreturned. The arrest of the sound truck driver followed immediatelythereafter. Footage of the driver’s arrest shows him screaming in pain asthe police pulled him out of the truck, his foot stuck in the steeringwheel.

Protesters are organizing various events in the upcoming days of the G8Summit, between the 7th and 9th of July. The No! G8 Legal Team will bepaying close attention to the behavior of the police and government. “Laborand peace movement leaders are concerned that the police will arrest themfor organizing these protests, search their homes and interrogate theirfamily members,” said Dan Spalding, Legal Worker Vice President of theNational Lawyers Guild.

Japanese law permits police to hold and interrogate suspects in the policestation for 23 days without formal charges. They can interrogate suspectsfor up to 12 hours at a time. While detained arrestees can be forced to siton their knees the entire time they are awake, not being able to move, evento use the bathroom without asking permission. This permission is not alwaysgranted.

“We take all arrests very seriously, and the specifics of the procedure, such as the 23 day detainment in the police station, the absence of lawyersto oversee the conditions of process, the physical violence involved in theinterrogations, not being allowed medication, the fear of putting friends, family, and affiliations at risk are only a part of the damage. Its alsoabout the anger and sense of shame which stays and creates more damage. It’sthe humiliation of not being able to take care of your own.” Commented Gen,a participant in the counter G8 protests.

He continued: “I am personally grateful for the presence of activists fromthroughout the world. The spirit and experiences, levels of militancy theybring, for just being here in solidarity. Overall it has been a veryenergizing experience, and we are in high spirits. I am grateful for yourcontinued presence and support. It is what authorities have tried to preventthrough repressive measures. International solidarity and pressure at thismoment will bring us to another level.”

International pressure can help prevent more people being arrested.

21,000 police mounted in the area. Conveys from the U.S also sent, including a fleet of helicopters and over 100 armed forces.

The Japanese Police also have a fleet of spy wannabes, human cameras, or more generally, creeps. They are quite obvious with their comms equipment stuffed in backbacks with wires exposed. They cannot arrest or attack, but act as the eyes and ears of the police, so that if the pigs do want to raid, they can. They are wired in to a police channel and are able to snitch on a particular person under surveillance.

I wonder what is done with all the video footage and audio and photographs collected by the snitches. It is mindnumbing to imagine if there a mainframe that has data on everyone physically in the country from the moment they arrive.

There seems to be a lot of internalized policing here. It is very evident in the Left.
The most annoying aspect of the demo was the volunteer corp of monitors during the demonstration policed the crowd, allowing the riot cops to not have to actually do much until they were ready to make targetted arrests. It is unfortunate especially to see this enacted by women in their 50s who do not seem to realize that they are being tools for the pigs and destroying purpose of protest.

In seeing the ubiquitous surveillance element in Japanese society, not just with the human cameras but the constant video surveillance presence in the streets, corridors, stores, trains, public and private space, I wonder if this contributes to a common tendency by mainstream society to objectify and appropriate cultures, subcultures, and landscapes with such ease. I mean a sort of mainstreamed conditioning to not regard privacy or maintain personal boundaries around visibility and to flatten the subject into a dimensionless stereotypical objects.
